Detailed notes
    - Introduction: The information on oral health indices have key role in improving the oral health level of communities. Aim: To estimate prevalence and severity of dental caries and periodontal status, determine some nutri- tional and socio-demographic characteristics and oral health behaviors in adults and elderly in Turkey. Subjects and Methods: This cross-sectional study was held on a sample selected with proportional stratified cluster sampling method according to the type of resi- dence by TSI and 3,176 individuals had been reached. The selected ages were 35-44 and 65-74. The data were gathered by calibrated 27 dental students during home visits according to WHO-1997. Results: At all ages, the percentage of not having toothbrush was very high. At age 35-44, 9.9% has never visited a dentist; only 26.2% were caries free. Mean DMFT was 10.8 in 35-44 year-olds and raised 25.8 among 65-74 year-olds. In adults and elderly, prevalence of crown caries was higher in females than in males. Adults and elderly had lower caries prevalence in urban than rural areas. Root caries pre- valence was 20.1% for adults and 28.4% for elderly. Edentulousness was 2.6% and 48.0% for 35-44 and 65-74 year-olds, respectively. Calculus problems were high in 35-44 years. Rural subjects had more severe periodontal scores than did in urban individuals. Conclusion: The community based oral disease prevention programs are still in urgent needs for the promotion of oral health in Turkey.
